When treating Hansen's Disease patients, Dr. Maruyama noticed that the
number of Cancer patients were extremely small among the patients of Hansen's
Disease and Tuberculosis.
Dr. Maruyama made an inference that the antibody of Tuberculosis germs and Hansen's Disease germs, which are in the same family as Tuberculosis germs, had the power to get rid of Cancer.
The experiments using animals, which have different characteristics from those of human, no good results were achieved. However, with the cooperation of internists and surgeons in 1965, Maruyama Vaccine was injected twice a week to the patient with terminal cancer, who was diagnosed that the remaining days were only two or three months. The patient recovered his strength, and the tumor had almost disappeared.
Maruyama Vaccine is the substance extracted from human tuberculosis germs, and it is the soluble substance composed of polysugar constituted of arabino-mannan, nucleic acid, and small amount of nitrogenous chemical compound. Tuberculosis germs are highly toxic, however, Maruyama Vaccine has no bad reaction as the poisonous elements exist mainly in the protein family. Maruyama Vaccine has no effect to directly kill cancer cells. Treatment by Maruyama Vaccine is one of the immune treatments called "non-idiosyncratic immune treatment". It is the treatment that can fight against cancer appeared to any part of the human body. We can name it as "the treatment for the whole body" instead of the one for "the limited part of the body".
Cancer is made of cancer cells and interstitium (connective tissue called collagen) which surround and support cancer cells. When Maruyama Vaccine is injected, many lymphocytes appear in interstitium, and connective tissues proliferate very much. And they gather around cancer cells. Cancer cells surrounded by lymphocytes and connective tissues atrophy and/or collapse. It has become clear that by injecting appropriate amount of Maruyama Vaccine, interferon is produced in the host, and macrophages are activated, which prevent increase of cancer cells.
Late Dr. Shoji Dohi, an authority on dermatology, has named the vaccine as
"Maruyama Tuberculosis Germs Vaccine" in his book, "Dermatology and Venereal Disease".
Since then the vaccine has been called with simplified name of "Maruyama Vaccine".
